THE RECORD

Garden of the Underworld is Ali Holder's first record since 2020 — five songs written in the fog of a divorce, mapping the in-between season where old identities fall away to make room for the new. It's cinematic, confessional gothic Americana: cello, keys, electric guitar, and bass clarinet building lush, stormy worlds beneath a voice that has long been one of Austin's most distinctive.

Holder doesn't treat the record as a release so much as a world. Across an "Art Generating Art" cycle, each song is translated into other forms — a curated wine pairing, projected visual art, real-time imagery, and a custom Tarot deck illustrated around the EP's narrative — turning a private reckoning into something a room full of people can step inside together.

A longtime fixture of the Austin scene with two LPs and two EPs to her name, Holder writes where indie folk meets gothic Americana, conjuring songs that live or die on the strength of their story. Garden of the Underworld is her most fully realized world yet.
